US Department of State Apostille

In addition to authenticating documents through the California Secretary of State’s Office, we also provide document authentication from the US Department of State in Washington DC.

Certain countries may ask for your documents to not only be authenticated at the state level (California) but also at the Federal level (US Department of State in Washington DC).

Most countries who are members of the Hague Apostille convention, will not request these additional steps.  It’s usually the case for countries who are NOT members.   A list of members and non members of the Hague Apostille convention can be found here:

For example, India requests California documents to first be authenticated by the State (Apostille) then by the Embassy in San Francisco.

Another example: Italy is requesting the California Birth Certificate to be certified by the US Department of State.  In order for the US Department of State to authenticate this document, it first needs to be authenticated by the California Secretary of State.  The steps demonstrate the process involved.  Keep in mind not every document requires these steps.

It’s important to find-out what is necessary by the person or company requesting these documents in order to avoid any delays.  Please give us a call or Contact Us so we can help direct you in the right direction.

If the destination country has asked for your California documents to be authenticated by the US Department of State and then the Consul / Embassy office, we can help.  The chart displays the steps that are required.  Once we receive your documents, we’ll handle the rest.  Documents are always hand-delivered and insured ensuring the security of your documents.

Please call us or Contact Us before mailing in your documents for verification.
